In this wild wondering I am inviting you to really think about this quote by Ram Dass, “We’re all just walking each other home.” These sage words came into my life a few years ago and they actually changed me at a soul level. As many of you know I have spent some time with people as they are transitioning through the last days of their earthly lives. In both my pastoral roles as a minister and chaplain I have been blessed and challenged as I walked alongside some magnificent souls. These words by Ram Dass really helped me to inner stand the significance of journeying with each other as we navigate this mysterious thing called life. The soul purpose of walking each other home just made so much sense.
I often use this quote at the celebration of life services that I officiate. It serves as a balm, a light in the darkness, for the loved ones who have courageously taken the last steps with their beloved ones. It helps make heart sense of the unique experiences they shared. Sometimes we walk together for a short while. Sometimes we walk for a lifetime. Sometimes it requires much of us. Sometimes it is beautiful beyond our wildest dreams. Whatever the walk may entail there is one thing for certain, it will change us and the person we are journeying with.
Ram Dass’s words arouse a deep sense of belonging, acceptance, and unconditional love. Part of the journey of walking another home is about seeing them… really seeing them… really seeing them for who they are! The masks come off and the filters of judgment fall away. We are invited to simply be and see one another as the brilliantly divine beings that we were created to be. When this happens the seer and the seen are changed as we come home to ourselves and one another. We are all just walking each other home!
“No one can know his own beauty or perceive a sense of his own worth until it has been reflected back to him in the mirror of another loving, caring human being.”
~John Powell
One of my favourite hymns is “The Servant Song” written by Richard Gillard. It illustrates this theme of companioning perfectly. The lyrics are profound as they illuminate the role of being a servant… a fellow traveller on the road. Here are a couple of verses for your wondering pleasure.
We are pilgrims on a journey Fellow travellers on the road We are here to help each other Walk the mile and bear the load. I will weep when you are weeping When you laugh, I’ll laugh with you I will share your joy and sorrow Till we’ve seen this journey through.
This exact image of the two elephants and quote was hanging front and centre at the funeral home that handled the final arrangements for my mother. It provided comfort and it offered validation with regards to the importance of walking each home. We are on a journey through birth, death, and rebirth together. Blessed be.
I am grateful to be walking with each of you. May our circle of companionship grow in love and joy as we journey on. Happy Summer Solstice on Thursday followed by the Full Strawberry Moon in the sign of Capricorn on Friday! May you find time to rest in the sunshine & moonshine.
With Respect,
Jacqueline
